Rockets Rally From Four Runs Down to Defeat Youngstown State, 6-4

Niles, OH – Toledo (6-23-1, 2-4 MAC) came from four runs down to defeat Youngstown State (6-18, 1-7 Horizon), 6-4, at Eastwood field.  With the victory, the Rockets improve to 6-23-1 on the season.

"It was a really good come from behind victory," head coach Cory Mee said. "I'm proud of the guys for the way we kept grinding during the game."

The Rockets went to the bullpen often and used a total of seven pitchers to pick up the win.  Freshman RHP Luke Schaefer earned his first collegiate victory after throwing 1.0 inning and not allowing a hit. Freshman LHP Michael Jacob shut the door on his fifth save of the season after 1.0 inning of work. Sophomore LHP Alex Wagner was the starter for UT and threw 2.0 innings, allowing three runs to cross the plate and striking out one batter.  Junior RHP Josh Cales, sophomore RHP Nolan Silberhorn, junior RHP Jordan Kesson and senior RHP/CF John Martillotta also pitched in relief for the Midnight Blue & Gold.

"Our bullpen was huge for us," Mee said. "It put seven scoreless innings on the board which allowed us to come back. It was a great team effort."

Leading the way offensively was sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger, who went 3-for-4 with one double and three RBI, tying a career-high. Senior SS Deion Tansel tied a game-high with three hits and knocked in one run. Junior DH Jake Krupar earned his second RBI of the season after coming on as a pinch hitter.

"In the last couple of weeks the bats have started to heat up," Mee said. "We're a lot more consistent at the plate with our approach and it's showing."

Youngstown State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. Andrew Kendrick started the scoring with a single to left field to bring home Lorenzo Arcuri. Shane Willoughby hit a two-run double to score Kendrick and Billy Salem, but would be thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit into a triple.

Kendrick picked up another RBI in the fourth with a solo home run to give the Penguins a 4-0 advantage.

Toledo cut the YSU lead in half in the fourth. Bollinger made the game 4-1 with a double to the right-center field wall to score Tansel.  After Bollinger advanced to third on a ground ball, he scored when Cales reached on a fielding error by the Penguins third baseman.

The Rockets gained the lead in the top of the fifth.  Tansel doubled down the left field line to score freshman 3B Riley Campbell.  Bollinger gave UT a 5-4 lead with a bases-clearing single up the middle to score Tansel and freshman LF Ross Adolph for his 13th and 14th RBI of the season.

After a rain delay, junior DH Jake Krupar added an insurance run with a single to center field to score senior RF Ryan Callahan and extended the Toledo advantage to 6-4.

YSU managed to load the bases in the ninth with two outs, but Jacob worked out of the jam to pick up the save.

UT is back in action on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. to begin a three-game series at MAC foe Kent State.
