Rockets Sweep Mid-Week Doubleheader at Eastern Michigan

Ypsilanti, MI – The Toledo softball team won both games of its mid-week doubleheader at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Rockets recorded a 7-6 come-from-behind victory in game one, and then recorded nine runs and nine hits to take game two, 9-0, in five innings. UT improves to an overall record of 8-25 and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference.

GAME 1
Freshman SS Megan Choate recorded a season-high three hits and swiped one bag. Junior 3B Brittany George and sophomore 1B Samantha Showalter each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. George also belted her first home run of the season.

Senior RHP Marla Gooding (7-12) claimed the victory for the Rockets after pitching all seven innings. Gooding allowed three earned runs, walked one and struck out two.

EMU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first two innings.

Toledo pulled within one in the top of the fifth when sophomore C Kaitlyn Bergman and Rausch scored on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively.

The Eagles answered with two runs of their own to close out the inning and remain in the lead, 5-2.

Toledo closed the gap as George blasted a two-run homer to center field, scoring junior 2B Chandler Rice. Freshman Katie Cozy then doubled to left field, allowing Bergman to plate a run and tie up the game, 5-5.

The Rockets took their first lead of the game in the final frame after Rice tripled off the wall to allow Showalter to cross the plate. George then brought in Rice on an RBI single to center field.

The Eagles recorded a lone run in the home half of the seventh, which was not enough to take back the lead against the Rockets.

GAME 2
Rice was Toledo's top offensive threat in game two, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, four RBI and one stolen base. Junior Celeste Fidge went 2-for-2 in the contest while also notching her third homer of the season.

Freshman RHP Heather Webb's first victory of the season came in the form of a shutout in game two. Webb (1-8) threw for all five innings and struck out two, while not allowing any earned runs or walking any batters.

Toledo plated two runs in each of the first three innings. Rice hit a two-run homer in both the first and third frames. Choate and Lemieux each hit an RBI single up the middle in the second.

The Midnight Blue & Gold took an impressive 9-0 lead by adding three runs in the fifth. Showalter stole home on an EMU error and Fidge hit a two-run bomb to right field to close out the Rockets' scoring.

The Rockets will be back in action at Scott Park this weekend, April 8-9, when they welcome Ohio to the Glass City. UT will battle the Bobcats in a single contest on Friday at 3:00 p.m. before returning for Saturday's doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
