TOLEDO, OH – Toledo picked up a stellar pitching performance from LHP junior Steven Calhoun but fell short in extra innings, 3-1, to Western Michigan (12-25, 5-8) at Scott Park on Friday, April 29. No runs were scored in the first nine frames. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 9-33-1 and 4-9 in the Mid-American Conference.
Calhoun tossed a season-high eight shutout innings and fanned six batters during his best outing of the year. Calhoun scattered eight hits and did not walk a batter in the start. Junior RHP Josh Cales was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 earned runs in 1.1 frames. Freshman LHP Michael Jacob also allowed one earned run to score in the tenth in 0.2 innings pitched.
Senior C Lucas Sokol drove in the lone RBI for the Rockets in his third multi-hit game of the season. Senior SS Deion Tansel extended his reached base streak to 12 with a 2-for-4 day. Junior PH Corey Tipton also reached base after a 13-pitch at-bat in the tenth.
No runs were scored until the tenth inning. WMU jumped on the board with a Hunter Prince double down the left field line to score Sean Pastora and Nick Vogelmeier. Jesse Forestell made the game 3-0 with a single to left-center field to score Prince.
Sokol earned one back for Toledo in the bottom half of the inning with a single to right field to score sophomore CF AJ Montoya. UT had two runners on with two outs, but was unable to tie the game.
Toledo will continue the series on Saturday, April 30 at 1:05 p.m. at Scott Park.
