Season-High 16 Hits Propel Rockets to 13-10 Game 2 Win Over Miami

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo split Friday's twinbill with Miami by rebounding from a 6-5 (10 inn.) setback in Game 1 with a come-from-behind 13-10 victory over the RedHawks in Game 2. The Rockets improve to 6-24, 1-4 MAC, while Miami is now 19-13, 4-1 MAC. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single contest beginning at Noon.

GAME 1

Junior 2B Chandler Rice was the heavy hitter in game one, going 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior 3B Brittany George went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Senior RHP Marla Gooding took the loss for the Rockets after pitching all 10 innings. Gooding allowed six earned runs, walked three and struck out six.

Toledo was quick to get on the board with two runs in the first. Junior Celeste Fidge hit her second homer of the season over the right-field fence. Senior OF Jessica Lemieux had reached previously on a dropped third strike and was able to cross the plate.

Miami notched a solo homer in the fifth, but Rice answered back with one of her own in the sixth. Rice's second home run of the season brought the score to 3-1.

The RedHawks plated two runs in the seventh to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.

Miami added three more runs to the board in the ninth and tenth innings, while Toledo could only plate two en route to its defeat.

GAME 2

Celeste Fidge and Jessica Lemieux led the offense in the second contest as both went 3-for-4 with a double. Lemieux recorded two runs and Fidge tallied two RBI. Sophomore 1B Samantha Showalter (2-for-4) and Brittany George (2-for-4) also had a multi-hit game with both recording two RBI and a double.

Marla Gooding (6-11) came in as a relief for the Rockets and walked away with the victory. Gooding pitched 3.0 innings, gave up one earned run and struck out two. Starter Heather Webb hurled 3.2 innings while giving up six earned runs, walking four and striking out two.

Toledo scored first again with a run in both the first and second innings. Lemieux first scored on a Miami error and then sophomore C Kaitlyn Bergman crossed the plate on sophomore OF Ashley Rausch's RBI triple.

Miami plated four runs on two homers in the top of the third, but the Rockets added two make it a 4-4 contest after three innings.

The RedHawks took what appeared to be an insurmountable 9-4 lead in the fourth as Toledo was 1-12 when trailing by five runs.

The Rockets were able to plate six runs in the fourth to regain the lead, 10-9. Showalter doubled to center field to score Lemieux who had reached on a single. Showalter and Maynard then crossed the plate on Rice's RBI single. Bergman hit her second homer of the season to left field to score the final three runs of the inning.

Gooding entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of freshman Danni Ryan who had taken over for Webb in the fourth. Miami hit its third home run of the game to tie the score, 11-11, but Fidge was able to regain the lead for the Rockets with a base hit to score Emery.

In the home half of the sixth, Gooding tripled in her first at-bat of the season to score Brittany George with an insurance run. Lemieux' single to center plated Gooding with the final run of the contest.
