Tallahassee, FL – Toledo was edged 3-2 by No. 14 Florida State at Dick Howser Stadium on Wednesday, March 10. The Rockets were no-hit by FSU, and lost on a walk-off suicide-squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth. With the loss, the Rockets drop to 1-11-1 on the year.
"I was proud of the way we played tonight," head coach Cory Mee said. "We played with passion, poise and really got after it tonight."
Freshman Michael Jacob took the loss after giving up the bunt in the ninth. Jacob pitched 1.2 innings, and worked out of jams in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to keep the game tied. The St. Clairsville, OH native fanned two batters in the game.
"There isn't a guy on our team I'd rather have the ball at the end of the game than Michael," said Mee. "He's fearless, and that's one thing we love about him."
Cole Sands, Cobi Johnson and Jim Voyles all pitched in the no-hitter for the Seminoles. Voyles picked up the win after throwing 4.0 innings and striking out five.Â
Senior Kyle Slack pitched 4.0 innings in the start for the Rockets and allowed one earned run. Junior Steven Duby and freshman Casey Johnson also pitched for the Rockets in relief.Â
"Kyle pitched well tonight," said Mee. "His stuff was good and he located his pitches. He did everything we asked him to do."
Florida State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Ben Deluzio hit a two-out single to right field to bring home Cal Raleigh from second. Toledo ended the inning with a 2-4-2 putout as Gage West was gunned down at home on the double steal.
Toledo picked up the lead in the fourth without recording a hit. After 2B Matt Hansen was hit by a pitch and SS Deion Tansel walked to put runners on first and second. Senior DH Dan Zuchowski reached on a throwing error from the FSU that brought home Hansen and Tansel and gave UT a 2-1 lead.
FSU tied the game in the sixth when West grounded out to the second baseman, bringing home Raleigh.
The Seminoles put two runner in scoring position in the seventh, but freshman RHP Michael Jacob worked out of the jam to keep the score tied. Jacob found himself with a runner in scoring position again the eighth, but struck out Dylan Busby to end the inning.
Matt Henderson won the game for FSU after laying down a bunt to bring home Darren Miller. It was the first no-hitter for Florida State since 1998.Â
Toledo is back in action on Friday, March 11 against Jacksonville at 6:00 p.m. at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
