TOLEDO, OH – Toledo picked up its first win of the Mid-American Conference season, 3-2, against Buffalo (8-11, 2-1 MAC) on Sunday, March 27 at Scott Park in the series finale. With the victory, the Rockets improve to 4-20-1 overall and 1-2 in MAC play.
Â
"We really needed this one today and our guys responded," head coach
Cory Mee said. "We got great pitching performances and defensive play today. I was pleased with how we competed and I'm glad the guys were rewarded for it."
Â
The contest was a pitchers' duel as both teams only combined for seven hits. Senior RHP
Caleb Schillace picked up his first win of the season after throwing 3.0 innings in relief. Schillace only allowed one hit and one walk. Senior RHP
Ross Achter started the contest for UT and threw 5.0 frames while allowing just two runs to cross the plate, with both being unearned. Achter tied a career-high in strikeouts with six, marking the second-straight start where Achter has fanned six batters. Freshman RHP
Michael Jacob slammed the door in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Â
"I love giving Michael the ball in that situation," Mee said. "He's got a fearless mentality and really goes out and attacks the hitters."
Â
Shawn Dubin threw a complete game in the loss for the Bulls. Dubin tossed 8.0 frames and allowed one earned run while striking out five batters.
Â
Sophomore LF
AJ Montoya ripped his second home run in as many days with a solo shot over the left field fence. The bomb was Montoya's fourth of the season and his eighth RBI of the year. Senior SS
Deion Tansel picked up the only other Rocket hit on a bunt. Tansel also swiped a bag and scored one run.
Â
The game was quiet until Toledo picked up its first hit in the fourth inning. Tansel used his speed to reach on a bunt single and to take second and third on a stolen base and throwing error. Sophomore 1B
Dalton Bollinger brought Tansel home on a fielder's choice to give UT a 1-0 lead.
Â
Buffalo took the lead in fifth inning when Bobby Sheppard ripped a two-RBI double to right-center field to give UB a 2-1 advantage. Montoya tied the game for the Midnight Blue & Gold in the same inning with a solo home run.
Â
Toledo used small-ball to take the lead in the sixth. After freshman RF
Ross Adolph reached on a walk, senior DH
Ryan Callahan pushed him to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Adolph advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.
Â
The Rockets will be back in action on Wednesday, March 30 against Ohio State. The meeting will be the third this season, as the Rockets saw the Buckeyes twice in the opening weekend of the season. UT is 0-1-1 against OSU this season.
