Toledo Drops Series Opener to Indiana, 9-6

Bloomington, IN – Toledo fell to Indiana, 9-6, at Bart Kaufman Field on Friday, March 18.  With the loss, the Rockets drop to 2-15-1.  UT fought in the ninth and scored five runs, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Junior LHP Steven Calhoun picked up the loss for the Rockets after throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs to cross the plate.  Junior RHP Steven Duby, junior RHP Jordan Kesson and freshman RHP Jake Stout also pitched in relief for UT.  Duby and Kesson did not allow a run to score.

Kyle Hart picked up the win for Indiana after throwing 8.0 frames and allowing one run. 

Senior SS Deion Tansel led the way at the plate, going 1-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.  Freshman Riley Campball and Dalton Bollinger also knocked in one RBI. 

Toledo jumped out to an early lead when sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger ripped an RBI single that scored senior OF John Martillotta.  Martillotta reached on a triple to right-center field. 

Indiana tied the game in the second inning, 1-1, with a home run from Austin Cangelosi.

The Hoosiers would bust the game open in the fourth with a five-run inning.  After a two-RBI single from Isaiah Pasteur, a bases loaded walk would make the game 4-1.  Another two-RBI single from Luke Miller would cap the inning and give IU a 6-1 lead.

Indiana extended its lead to 9-1 with a wild pitch and another two-RBI single, this time from Austin Cangelosi.

Toledo added five in the ninth but was unable to complete the comeback. Senior PH Cory Finkler kicked off the rally when he reached on an error to score senior RF Ryan Callahan to cut the lead to 9-2.  A two-RBI double down the left field line from Tansel made the game 9-4.  Freshman Riley Campbell picked up another RBI in the next at-bat to score Tansel, and senior OF John Martillotta brought him home after reaching on an error to cut the lead to 9-6.

UT will be back in action on Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. against Indiana.  Senior LHP Ross Achter is expected to take the hill for the Rockets.
