Jacksonville, FL – Toledo dropped the rubber match with Jacksonville on Sunday, March 13 at Sessions Stadium, 5-1. With the loss, the Rockets drop to 2-13-1 on the year.
"We created some opportunities early, but unfortunately we weren't able to cash them in," head coach Cory Mee said. I thought we got some decent relief pitching to keep us in the game. One thing our team has done well this week is compete hard and give us a chance to win each night."
Junior RHP Sam Shutes picked up the loss after throwing 3.0 innings and allowing four earned runs with two strike outs. Junior Caleb Schillace, freshman Michael Jacob and freshman Casey Johnson also pitched in relief for the Rockets. Jacob did not allow a hit in 1.0 inning.
Senior 3B Dan Zuchowski picked up the lone RBI for the Rockets on a sacrifice fly during a 2-for-3 day. Sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger also picked up two singles and sophomore 2B Matt Hansen ripped a double.
Jacksonville jumped on the board first when Connor Stephens hit a bases loaded single up the middle to bring home two Dolphins and give JU a 2-0 lead.Â
JU extended its lead in the third when a run scored on a senior SS Deion Tansel error which allowed Sam Armstrong to score. JJ Gould would then steal home on a double steal that drew a throw to second to extend the Dolphin lead to four.Â
Jacksonville would extend its lead to five when Dakota Julyila ripped a double to the left-center gap that scored Evan Fernandez.
Toledo cut the lead in the fourth when  Zuchowski hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored freshman DH Ross Adolph. Adolph previously reached after being hit by a pitch.Â
The Midnight Blue & Gold will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16 against Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium at 6:05 p.m.
