Toledo Uses Four-Run Fifth Inning to Take Down Jacksonville, 6-1

Jacksonville, FL – Toledo used a four-run fifth inning to take down Jacksonville, 6-1, on March 12 at Sessions Stadium.  With the win, the Rockets improve to 2-12-1.

"Today was a really great performance by our team," head coach Cory Mee said.  "Our keys to success are pitching, defense and clutch hitting and we got all three from our squad."

Senior LHP Ross Achter earned the win after throwing 6.0 innings of two-hit baseball and striking out three.  Steven Duby also picked up his first save of the year after pitching 3.0 innings and striking out two batters.

"Ross pounded the zone and was ahead in count all day," said Mee. "He made some big pitches and was much more efficient today."

Ross Achter gives credit to the defense for keeping the JU hit count at two.

"The defensive made some great plays behind me and made it easy," Achter said. "They gave me a lot of confidence on the field."

Senior CF John Martillotta led the way for the Rockets with one double the brought home three RBI.  Martillotta cleared the bases on a 3-2, two-out pitch to break the game open for the Rockets.

"Our team has been grinding and we finally put one together today where we got on top," Martillotta said. "We know we have to come out with a lot of energy tomorrow."

Sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger and senior C Lucas Sokol each added one RBI and one run for the Rockets.

After one Toledo error and an infield single put runners on, a Nathan Koslowski groundout brought home JJ Gould to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead.

The Rockets got the lead in the third after two JU errors.  After a senior C Lucas Sokol single and senior Deion Tansel reached on an error, both scored on an errant pickoff to give UT a 2-1 lead.

UT busted the game open in the fifth with a four run inning.  Sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger ripped a single up the middle to score freshman RF Ross Adolph.  The Midnight Blue & Gold loaded the bases, and Martillotta ripped a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Rockets a 6-1 lead.

Toledo will wrap up its spring break trip on Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. in a rubber match with Jacksonville.
