Vero Beach, FL - Toledo dropped the second game of the Historic Dodgertown Classic to Pittsburgh, 7-2 at Holman field in Vero Beach, FL.
Senior LHP
Ross Achter (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs over six innings pitched.
"It was a tough game for us," head coach
Cory Mee said. "I was really pleased with Ross' start. It was a big thing to throw six innings on a weekend where we're playing four games. He pitched very well and gave us a chance to win."
Junior
Josh Cales led the way offensively for the Rockets with a double and an RBI in a 1-for-3 day.
Toledo got on the board first as Cales hit a deep double to score senior
Dan Zuchowski who reached base after being hit by a pitch in the top of the second.
Pitt scored in three consecutive innings after the Rockets jumped out to a lead. The Panthers answered in the second with an RBI single from Caleb Parry. UP struck again in the third when Alex Kowalczyk grounded out to the shortstop, but the runner from third advanced home. Pitt put two on runners on, but Achter (0-1) struck out the pinch hitter to get out of the jam. Perry would again pick up an RBI with a home run in the fourth.Â
UT cut the lead to one in the fifth. After sophomore
Matt Hansen reached on an error, senior
Deion Tansel ripped a double to the fence to move Hansen to third. Sophomore AJ Montoya picked up his second RBI of the season as he grounded out to the shortstop and advanced the runner home.Â
Pittsburgh got the lead back to two with a single as Caleb Perry earned his third RBI of the day in the bottom of the sixth.
Pitt extended the lead as RHP
Kevin Kline hit a batter in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded to give the Panthers a three run lead. Charles LeBlanc ripped a two RBI single in the eighth to extend the lead to five.Â
Toledo will take on Niagara on field two of Dodgertown at 6:00 p.m. today.
