Toledo countered with a nine-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a 21-yard field goal by Jameson Vest. On Akron's next drive, Tom O'Leary matched Vest's kick with a 21-yarder of his own to make the score 10-3 with 4:13 to play in the first quarter.

Toledo tied the score on the first play of the second quarter on a nine-yard run by Terry Swanson, then took the lead, 13-10, later in the period on a 23-yard field goal by Vest.

The Rockets scored on the final play of the half on an 18-yard TD pass from Woodside to tight end Michael Roberts, giving them a 20-10 lead at the break.  The drive covered 51 yards in just 46 seconds, and was keyed by a 20-yard run by Hunt.

Hunt kept the offense rolling in the third quarter, rushing five times for 33 yards in a six-play drive he capped off with a two-yard score to make it 27-10 with 9:56 left in the quarter. Akron cut the lead to 27-17 with an eight-play, 75-yard drive that was culminated by a 27-yard TD strike from Woodson to JoJo Natson.
