MUNCIE, IN – Toledo couldn't slow down Ball State's red-hot shooting from the perimeter Wednesday evening in an 87-69 setback to the Cardinals in the Mid-American Conference opener for both squads. BSU buried 13 treys to match the most allowed by the Rockets in a game this season.
Sophomore guard
Stuckey Mosley led the Rockets (9-5, 0-1 MAC) with 17 points, marking the first time this season he has paced UT in the scoring column. Senior center
Nathan Boothe (16 pts., team-high six boards) and junior guard
Jonathan Williams (14 pts.) also were in double digits for the Midnight Blue and Gold.
Junior forward Ryan Weber topped five Cardinals in double figures with a game-high 21 points in addition to tying for the team lead with seven boards.
Ball State (10-4, 1-0 MAC) was consistent shooting the ball, shooting an identical 48.4 percent in both the first and second half. The Cardinals hit 7-of-16 three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes and 6-of-14 long-distance shots following halftime.
UT posted a 40.4 shooting mark, thanks to a 54.2 FG% in the second half after making just 10-of-33 attempts in the opening stanza. The Rockets were 9-of-26 behind the three-point arc and 14-of-19 from the charity stripe.
The Rockets' only lead in the contest came after a Mosley trey and freshman guard
Jaelan Sanford's three-point play put UT up 6-2 with 17:33 to play in the first half. Ball State answered with a 13-2 spurt that was capped off by a pair of Weber treys.
Sanford's second three-point play cut UT's deficit to 17-16 with 11:05 left in the first half, but the Cardinals wouldn't let the Rockets climb any closer. Ball State scored the half's final five points to take a 38-28 lead into the locker room.
UT opened the second half strong and was within 45-43 with 16:00 remaining following back-to-back treys from Boothe and Williams and a pair of Mosley free throws. Sophomore guard Jeremie Tyler buried a trey on Ball State's next trip up the court and freshman center Trey Moses' three-point play gave the hosts a double-digit lead, 59-49, with just over 11 minutes remainaing.
The Rockets didn't come closer than seven points the rest of the way and Ball State put the game away with 10 straight points for a 71-54 cushion at the 6:42 mark.
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 9 with a trip to Oxford, OH to face Miami. Tip-off time is set for 4:00 p.m. The RedHawks (6-8, 0-1 MAC) dropped their conference opener as well with a 73-62 setback at Bowling Green.
