Nathan Boothe's Double-Double Propels Rockets to 84-76 Win at Miami

OXFORD, OH - Toledo led by as many as 28 points Saturday afternoon en route to an 84-76 triumph at Miami for its first Mid-American Conference win of the season. The victory was UT's sixth straight over the RedHawks, the Rockets' longest unbeaten stretch ever in the all-time series.

Senior center Nathan Boothe tallied a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season to lead Toledo (10-5, 1-1 MAC).

"Nathan really responded for us today after not playing well at Ball State," Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "Getting the ball inside to him makes us a better basketball team. That's been a big emphasis for us all season, and it's something we'll continue to do."

Joining Boothe in double figures was junior guard Jonathan Williams and freshman guard Jaelan Sanford with 15 points apiece as well as sophomore guard Stuckey Mosley with 12 points. Mosley also dished out a team-high four assists.

UT shot 53.7 percent from the field and a sizzling 50.0 percent (13-off-26) from three-point range. Miami (6-9, 0-2 MAC) posted a 46.2 field-goal mark and was 8-of-20 (40 percent) from behind the three-point arc.

Toledo outrebounded the RedHawks by a 36-33 margin to win for the ninth time in 10 outings when grabbing more boards.

"We played really well for the first 30 minutes," Kowalczyk said. "We shared the ball and guarded, but then we didn't handle success well the final 10 minutes. Give Miami credit. They hit some tough shots, but we made some mistakes on the offensive and defensive ends that made the game a lot closer."

The RedHawks' senior guard tandem of Eric Washington and Geovonie McKnight paced the hosts with 21 and 16 points, respectively.

The Rockets took their first double-digit lead, 22-12, at the 13:19 mark thanks to Williams' trio of three-point field goals. Miami crept to within six points on three different occasions before UT finished the half with an 8-2 spurt for a 47-30 halftime cushion.

Boothe then scored six points in an 8-0 spurt in the first three minutes of the second half start for a 55-30 advantage.

Mosley's trey with 13:28 remaining gave Toledo its largest lead of the day, 65-37. The Rockets still possessed a 20-point lead, 71-51, following junior center Zach Garber's three-point play with 8:12 to play.

Miami chipped away at its deficit the rest of the way thanks to Toledo committing six turnovers and hitting just 11-of-18 free throws in the final eight minutes. The Rockets' lead didn't dip below double digits until Washington hit two free throws for an 80-71 deficit with 32 seconds left.

UT now returns to Savage Arena for its first two conference home games. The Rockets will host Northern Illinois (12-2, 1-0 MAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and Akron (13-2, 2-0 MAC) on Friday, Jan. 15. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. each night.
