West Lafayette, IN – Toledo's men's tennis kicked off its fall schedule this weekend at the Purdue Invitational and freshman Vince Anzalone (Willoughby Hills, OH) went on a four-match run to win the Flight C singles title.
"This was a tough tournament with a lot of fantastic tennis players," said head coach Al Wermer. "I think it was really beneficial for all of us."
Anzalone recorded three-consecutive two-set matches and a three-set decision (0-6, 6-3, 6-4) in the finals against Southern Illinois' Alex Pozo.
Freshman Reid Teatsorth was on his way to winning the Flight E singles title but dropped a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision to Ball State's Patrick Downs in the championship match.
"Vince and Reid both had breakout weekends," said Wermer. "They did a lot of work over the summer and are continuing to improve every day in our program."
Freshman Juan Carranza and sophomore Stephen Miller both won their first matches in Flight E singles but fell in the second-round. Carranza was unable to overcome Wright State's Marc Sodini in a tough three-set match (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and Miller dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Lewis' Andre Norasith.
Each of Toledo's doubles teams fell in the second-round of their flight. Anzalone teamed up with sophomore Omar Espinosa but lost 8-2 to a pair from Eastern Kentucky in Flight A. Carranza and Teatsorth lost 8-4 to the eventual Flight B runners-up from Ball State. Miller paired up with freshman Luka Vitosevic in Flight C and dropped a tough 9-7 decision to a Southern Illinois duo who eventually lost the championship match to EKU.
The Rockets return to action this weekend when they compete in the ITA All-American on Oct. 3-11. UT will host its Rocket Invitational the following weekend on Oct. 9-11.
