CHICAGO, IL – Toledo stretched its winning streak to four straight games with an impressive 60-51 victory over UIC on Sunday in the UIC Pavilion. With the win, the Rockets improve to 4-6 on the season.
The difference in today's non-conference contest was UT's ability to get to the charity stripe and convert. The Midnight Blue & Gold knocked down 22-of-28 (78.6 percent) from the free throw line, while the Flames converted only 3-of-8 (37.5 percent).
Senior
Brenae Harris paced the Rockets with a game-high 18 points, followed by junior
Janice Monakana and senior
Ana Capotosto with 13 and 12, respectively. The aforementioned trio did a bulk at the damage at the free throw line, shooting a combined 17-of-20 (85.0 percent).
The Rockets would need every one of those free throws in a tightly contest affair, as they shot only 34.0 percent (17-of-50) from the field, including 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point range, to snap UIC's (7-2) five-game winning streak.
Melita Emanuel-Carr led the Flames with 13 points, while former Rocket Kendyl Nunn and Ruvanna Campbell had 12 each. Campbell and Nunn were held in check for the most part by a stout defensive effort from UT. The duo came into the game averaging 18.8 and 15.3 ppg, respectively.
In a back-and-forth first period that featured four ties and four lead changes, the Rockets trailed 15-14 after 10 minutes of competition. Capotosto and Monakana combined to score nine of the 14 points in the quarter.
UT then opened the second period with a mini 8-4 burst to open up a 22-19 at the 5:49 mark. The Midnight Blue & Gold received a traditional three-point play from Capotosto, layup from Monakana and a trey on the wing from freshman
Halee Printz to give the visitors a lead they would relinquish.
The Flames momentarily closed the margin to a single point, before Toledo scored the final six points to assume a 28-21 advantage at the break. Harris accounted for four of the points in the waning moments of the half, while Capotosto contributed the other two to make it a seven-point difference at the intermission.
UT held the Flames scoreless over the final 5:27 and overall limited them to six points in the period.
UIC showed some spark in the opening moments of the third quarter and cut the deficit to a single point on three occasions, before the Rockets responded with a 7-0 run to stretch the margin to 39-31 at the 3:28 mark. Harris was the catalyst in the run and was credited with a triple and a jumper, while junior
Sophie Reecher tallied the other two points to create a three-possession cushion.
UIC's Nunn tried mightily to will her team back in the contest to start the final 10 minutes, igniting an 8-3 run to trim the margin to 45-42 at the 4:13 mark. The former Rocket scored six of the points in the opening five-plus minutes of the quarter to make a three-point difference.
Toledo responded in grand fashion, though, scoring eight of the next 10 points to seal the impressive road triumph. The trio of Monakana, Harris and Capotosto were responsible for every point in that crucial stretch to build an insurmountable advantage, 53-44, with 1:23 left on the clock.
Another key factor in today's road victory for the Rockets was there play on the boards. Toledo finished a 40-31 edge on the glass, fueled by a team-high eight by Capotosto. Redshirt freshman
Mikaela Boyd, Monakana and Harris also pulled down six rebounds each, while Reecher had five.
UT will now host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its non-conference finale on Tuesday, Dec. 29. The opening tip against the Golden Lions is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN3.
