Toledo Prevails Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Non-League Finale, 74-47

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo closed out its non-conference slate with a convincing 74-47 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday before 3,684 fans in Savage Arena. With the dominating victory, the Rockets' stretch their winning streak to five straight games and improve to 5-6 on the season.

Senior Ana Capotosto paced a balanced UT attack with a game-high 16 points. The two-time team captain has been the catalyst for the Midnight Blue & Gold during its unbeaten stretch, scoring in double figures each contest.

Sophomore Jada Woody added a career-tying best 11 points off the bench and sophomore Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott had 12 against the Golden Lions (3-8).

The Rockets also received solid efforts from junior Janice Monakana (nine pts., seven rebs.) and senior Brenae Harris (seven pts., season-high 10 rebs.) to coast to a season-high 27-point win.

In total, 11 different Rockets found the scoring column, including freshman walk-on Monique Evans, who recently joined the team over the holiday break.

In addition, redshirt freshman Lindsay Dorr made her collegiate debut after sitting out the previous 43 games while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee last October.

As a team, Toledo shot 40.6 percent (28-of-69) from the field, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point land, and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the charity stripe.

UT dominated every facet of tonight's contest, finishing with a 40-10 advantage in points in the paint, 22-4 edge in points off turnovers, 22-2 cushion in second-chance points and 14-0 advantage in fast break points. Each of the last three categories were season-high numbers for the victorious Rockets.

Toledo also posted a decisive 51-30 edge on the boards, with five players tallying at least five caroms. The 51 rebounds were a season best and marked the first time this year they won the battle on the boards by double figures. UT has now outrebounded its opponents by 40 (207-167) during its five-game unbeaten streak.

Niya Head led UAPB with 14 points, followed by Destiny Brewton with nine off the bench.

As a squad, Arkansas-Pine Bluff was limited to 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the floor, including 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from beyond the arc, and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the free throw line to suffer its fifth straight setback.

The Rockets used an early 11-2 run to open up a 15-7 lead with 5:09 remaining in the first period and never looked back. UT knocked down six of its first 10 shots from the floor, sparked by a triple along the baseline and a pair of charity tosses from Capotosto.

In the second quarter, Toledo received eight straight points from Woody to stretch its margin to 28-15 at the 5:13 mark. The Canton, MI native made two free throws, converted a traditional three-point play and drained a trey from the wing to give the home team a double-digit cushion.

The Golden Lions momentarily stopped UT's momentum with a three-point field goal by Brewton, but the Rockets responded by scoring 10 of the final 12 points to create a 38-20 lead at halftime. Three different Rockets tallied points in the waning stages of the opening stanza to build an 18-point bulge.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff came out of the break with a chip on its shoulder and strung together a quick 7-0 burst to close the margin to 43-29, forcing UT into a timeout at the 6:29 mark in the third period. Three different Golden Lions were credited with points in this stretch to prompt the stoppage in play.

The Rockets responded favorably out of the timeout, benefitting from a traditional three-point play from Capotosto, layups from freshman Kaayla McIntyre and Harris, and a trey by Woody to set the score at 55-33 after 30 minutes of competition.

UT was never threatened in the final quarter and emptied its bench, cruising to the 27-point home triumph.

The Rockets will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 2 when they open Mid-American Conference play at defending West Division champion Ball State (7-3). Game time versus the Cardinals is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Worthen Arena and can be seen on ESPN3.

UT has dropped the last three match-ups against BSU but still holds a 52-21 advantage in the all-time series, including a 22-13 edge in games in Muncie.
