Toledo Drops Non-League Match-Up at St. Bonaventure, 74-63

OLEAN, NY - Toledo suffered a 74-63 setback at St. Bonaventure in Sunday's non-conference match-up in the Reilly Center. With the loss, UT falls to 0-5 on the season.

Senior Ana Capotosto paced a season-high four Rockets in double figures with a season-best 15 points and seven rebounds, followed by junior Janice Monakana with 12 and senior Brenae Harris and sophomore Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott tallied 11 each.

The Rockets shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field, including 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from three-point range, and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe to suffer their first loss in four all-time contests against the Bonnies (3-2).

Katie Healy led SBU with a game-high 18 points, seven boards and four rejections, while Nyla Rueter and Miranda Drummond had 17 each. Rueter was dominant in the second half, scoring all her points after the intermission.

Toledo started strong and held a 9-6 lead at the 3:41 mark in the opening period. Four different Rockets tallied points in the first six-plus minutes in today's non-league contest, including a team-high four by junior Sophie Reecher.

UT dominated the glass in the opening 10 minutes and had a 15-6 edge to help the visitors claim an 11-8 advantage after the first quarter. The eight points allowed is a season low, surpassing Toledo's previous best defensive effort of 11 against Harvard in the second period of the URI Tip-Off Classic last Sunday, Nov. 22.

Toledo continued to hold the lead in the second quarter on a strength of a three-point field goal by Bravo-Harriott and a layup from Capotosto to make the score 16-12 with 5:42 left before intermission.

SBU then went on a game-changing 15-5 run over the next four-plus minutes to assume a 27-21 advantage at halftime. Healy and Drummond sparked the rally with 11 of the points to give the home team a lead they would not relinquish.

The Rockets' benefitted from a pair of treys from Bravo-Harriott and Capotosto in the opening stages of the third quarter to trim the margin to 38-35 at the 2:54 mark. UT's backcourt duo buried a pair of shots from beyond the arc to make it a one-possession affair.

Unfortunately for Toledo, the Bonnies responded with a 14-4 burst to extend the lead to 52-39 with 8:12 left in regulation. SBU's Drummond hit a pair of big shots and two charity tosses during the stretch to make it a double-digit contest.

The Rockets would not go down without a fight, as sophomore Jada Woody, Bravo-Harriott and Capotosto each knocked down triples to pull them within 54-48 at the 6:40 mark.

Toledo would not be able to close the margin as further though, as SBU's Rueter scored 14 points in the final period to give the Bonnies the 11-point home triumph. The all-conference guard converted four field goals and all four of her free throws in the final 10 minutes to propel SBU to its first ever victory over UT.

The Bonnies shot an efficient 50.0 percent (25-of-50) from the floor and a sizzling 90.5 percent (19-of-21) from the charity stripe. SBU was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line in the second half to close out the victory.

The Rockets will now return home for the first time in almost three weeks when they entertain Atlantic-10 power Dayton (5-1) on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The opening tip against the Flyers is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN3.

UT will host its fifth-annual Rocket Women's Basketball Educational Day in conjunction with the contest against UD. Schools from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan for eighth grade students or younger, teachers, administrators and chaperones are invited to spend the day in Savage Arena with the Rockets, as well as celebrate education and learning.
