TOLEDO, OH – Toledo picked up its first conference victory against arch-rival Bowling Green on Friday, 2-0. With the win, the Rockets improved to 5-9-0 on the year, and 1-4-0 in Mid-American Conference play.
UT found the back of net twice in the second half, as sophomore
Sophie Pohl scored her third goal of the year in the 53rd minute off of a beautiful assist from senior
Geri Siudzinski. 3 minutes later, sophomore
Regan Price stole the ball in the attacking zone and netted her second marker of the year on a rip from just inside the box to put the Midnight Blue & Gold up 2-0.
First-year head coach
TJ Buchholz knows what it means to take home the victory in the "Battle of I-75."
"We had a total team effort today." Buchholz said. "Defensively we played outstanding and offensively getting those two great goals was good for us. It's always nice to start the weekend off with a win."
Goal-scorer Pohl, who fired a match-high seven shots in the contest, echoed Buchholz's sentiments.
"We finally got that conference win under our belts." Pohl said. "It's been a long time coming and it feels great."
The Rockets fired a season-high 26 shots during the contest, and won a season –high seven corners as well. Freshman keeper
Katie Wilson started her first match of the year, and earned a shutout. Wilson made three saves, and Buchholz was pleased with his goalies performance.
"Katie did really well today," Buchholz said. "Bowling Green had a great attack going at times, and she had to come up big in moments. It's hard for a freshman to step in and she did just that."
Toledo returns to action against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m. The Rockets will hold a youth clinic after the match, and the contest can be seen live on ESPN 3.
