Toledo Drops Contest with MAC Foe Akron, 2-1

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo fell to Mid-American Conference foe Akron (6-9-1, 3-5-0) on Sunday, 2-1. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 6-11-0, and 2-6-0 in MAC play.
The Midnight Blue & Gold opened the scoring with a beautiful chip shot from senior Megan Connor in the eighth minute of the contest. Toledo controlled the possession for the first 20 minutes of play, but the Zips were able to break through when Katie George found the back of the net off of a cross in the 30th minute. UT would look to answer back in the first half, but was called offside five times in the last 15 minutes of the half.
"It was a great to get an early goal," first-year head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We had all the momentum early and Megan really worked hard to get opportunities."
Akron would gain the lead in the 59th minute of the contest when Hannah Werth scored directly from a corner kick. The ball spun off of freshman keeper Katie Wilson's hands and into the net. Freshman Italia Biondi would immediately get a good chance on goal on to equalize, but the Rockets were unable to score for the rest of the match.
UT outshot the Zips 20-7 during the contest, and nine of those shots were on target. Buchholz will look for his team to find the back of the net more during the last three fixtures of the regular season.
"We need to keep working on finishing," Buchholz said. "We're plenty good to score, but we've wasted opportunities. We can't do that when we play strong opponents."
The Rockets will return to action next weekend for a pair of weekend matches at Scott Park. UT will take on Ohio on Friday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 p.m. and Kent State on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. The match against the Golden Flashes will be senior day and will be shown live on ESPN3.Â
