TOLEDO, OH – Toledo (6-9-0, 2-4-0 MAC) will head east for a pair of Mid-American Conference contests this weekend. The Rockets will take on reigning MAC regular season and tournament champions Buffalo (7-5-2, 3-2-1 MAC) on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5:00 p.m. and Akron (5-8-1, 2-4-0 MAC) on Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon. The match against the Bulls can be watched on ubbulls.com.
The Rockets will look to continue a two-match winning streak, as they defeated arch-rival Bowling Green 2-0 to pick up their first conference victory last Friday. Two days later, they blanked Eastern Michigan 1-0. Freshman keeper
Katie Wilson earned the shutout in both contests and helped the Rockets jump to fourth in the MAC West Division standings.
"Anytime you get two wins in one weekend you get a confidence boost," first-year head coach
TJ Buchholz said. "There's a sense of excitement with the team right now and we feel like that will carry over to our very important matches this weekend."
Senior
Megan Connor will take the momentum into practice this week.
"Last weekend was huge for our team," Connor said. "It gave the team a lot of energy and that will be used this week to train at a high intensity."
The defense will need to keep up the good form going into this weekend, as UB is capable of finding the back of the net. The Bulls scored five goals last weekend, including four against NIU on Sunday.
"As a whole, our backline is really in sync right now," Buchholz said. "Katie had to grow up pretty quickly, and she's  done a great job so far. She's been good in the moments we've needed her, and that's helped our defense tremendously."
The Rockets hold a 12-8-1 all-time record against the Bulls, and last defeated Buffalo on Sept. 28, 2012. The Midnight Blue & Gold is also 12-1-1 all-time versus the Zips, and the only loss to UA came on Oct. 3, 2008 in Akron.
Following this weekend's matches, Toledo will wrap up its home schedule when it takes on Ohio on Friday, Oct. 23 at 1:00 p.m. and Kent State on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's match will be "Senior Day" for
Sam Tiongson,
Megan Connor,
Geri Siudzinski and
Angelica Hernandez and will be shown live on ESPN3.
