BUFFALO, NY – The University of Toledo softball team ended its nine-game skid on Sunday with a 6-2 win in eight innings over Buffalo at Nan Harvey Field.
The Rockets (15-31, 6-10 MAC) were led offensively by freshman 1B Celeste Fidge, who went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI.
Fidge opened the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the second inning to give Toledo an early lead. The Bulls bounced back, scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings off RBI singles to give them a 2-1 lead.
Entering the final inning, the Rockets trailed by one run, and received a double off the bat of senior 3B Lani Ernst to lead off the inning. Fidge stepped to the plate next and singled to second base. Ernst came all the way around from second following an error by the second baseman to tie the game at two.
Sophomore P Marla Gooding entered the game in the home half of fifth inning, inheriting runners at first and second with two outs. A walk forced the bases loaded on her first batter, but she was able to record her first of two strikeouts to end the inning. Gooding shut out the Bulls the rest of the game, going 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one walk.
In the eighth inning, the Toledo offense exploded for four runs to give them a commanding 6-2 lead which they held to conclude the game. Senior RF Erinn Wright led off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to shortstop, scoring junior CF Alyssa Smith from third. Fidge stepped to the plate two batters later and hit her second homer of the game, racking up three RBI.
The Rockets will play one non-league road game Wednesday at Oakland, before returning home to Scott Park for a six-game homestand, beginning with a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
