BOWLING GREEN, OH – Toledo freshman Bethany Thomas ripped a shot past the Bowling Green goalkeeper in the 77th minute of the play to lift UT past the Falcons on Sunday afternoon. The 1-0 victory sends the Rockets to 5-8-1 (2-4 Mid-American Conference) for the season.
Toledo dominated most of the contest, registering a staggering 28-5 shot advantage, 20 of which came in the second half. UT posted a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Midfielder Isa Echeverri led the attack with eight shots, three on goal, while sophomore Kiersten Johnson followed with five blasts of her own. Thomas was one of five Toledo players with at least two shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Tiongson was called upon for just one save while Toledo put 14 shots on goal making it a busy day for BGSU keeper Lauren Cadel. The freshman from Ontario single handedly kept the Falcons alive as she recorded 13 saves to run her season total to 99 stops.
The Rockets wasted no time applying the pressure as they nearly jumped out to a quick lead after senior defender Kirsten Catloth found Echeverri in the box off of a set piece but the redshirt freshman's header sailed just over the cross bar.
Toledo had another chance in the 33rd minute as Johnson spilt a pair of Falcon defenders and slipped through the back line for an open shot but Cadel was there for the stop.
The second half was more of the same for the Rockets offensive attack. Multiple quality chances kept Cadel and the BGSU defenders on their toes as the wave of UT forwards continue to press.
Echeverri had a pair of great chances beginning with a blast from 25 yards out which made Cadel complete a diving save in the 55th minute and then again put a shot on goal in the 58th minute on a free kick.
Toledo finally broke through on a corner kick from defender Megan Connor. The senior captain drove a ball into the box and found fellow senior Alexis Tice and Tice's header bounced to the feet of Thomas who buried it in the back of the net.
The Rockets return to the friendly confines of Scott Park on Friday Oct. 17th as they host Akron with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m.
