TOLEDO, OH - Central Michigan spoiled Toledo's Senior Night on Tuesday evening with a 68-56 triumph over the Rockets in Savage Arena. The contest served as the final home game for UT seniors Justin Anyijong and Anthony Wright.
Junior G Jay Shunnar was an impressive 8-of-9 from the field and topped the Rockets with a career-high 20 points. He was followed by sophomore G Malcolm Griffin (11 pts.) and redshirt freshman F Hayden Humes (10 pts., 9 reb.). Anyijong also contributed nine points and a season-best nine rebounds.
Freshman G Trey Zeigler led the Chippewas (10-19, 7-8 MAC) with a game-high 22 points with senior F Jalin Thomas adding 17 points. Freshman G Derek Jackson contributed 14 points as well as a game-high five steals.
The big difference in the contest was CMU's performance at the charity stripe as it converted 23-of-30 attempts compared to the Rockets' 6-of-16 performance. The visitors held a slim advantage in field-goal percentage, 43.5 to 42.6, but UT outrebounded the Chippewas by a 36-35 margin.
The Rockets (4-26, 1-14 MAC) weren't able to grab a lead in the contest but tied the score at 28-28 with 16:30 to play in the second half. Shunnar was nearly keeping UT within the game singlehandedly as he hit his first six shots, including a trey with 11:35 remaining to bring the Rockets within 41-38. CMU answered with a 6-0 spurt though and the closest Toledo could come the rest of the way was six points, 47-41, following Shunnar's three-point play at the 8:31 mark.
Toledo will close out its regular season on Saturday, Mar. 5 when it travels to Ypsilanti, MI to face Eastern Michigan. Tip-off time from the Convocation Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
