DAYTON, OH - Toledo saw its three-game win streak come to an end with a 102-69 loss to Dayton on Sunday in UD Arena. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 4-4 on the season.
The Flyers (5-3) shot a scorching 59.7 percent (37-of-62) from the field, including 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range, and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe to tally the most points by a UT opponent since Xavier scored 108 points in triple overtime on Dec. 9, 2001. Kristin Daugherty led UD with a game-high 19 points, while Olivia Applewhite (14 pts.), Justine Raterman (12 pts.), Casey Nance (11 pts.), Kari Daugherty (10 pts.) and Cassie Sant (10 pts.) each finished in double digits in the lopsided victory.
Senior Melissa Goodall paced three Rockets in double figures with 15 points, while sophomore Lecretia Smith had a career-high 14 points and junior Naama Shafir contributed 10 points with a game-high seven assists.
UT shot a season-best 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line, but the 2009-10 MAC West Division champions were no match for the high-powered Dayton attack.
The Flyers set the tone early, jumping out to a quick 13-1 lead and forced UT into a timeout at 16:09. The home team received field goals from four different starters to take an early double-digit advantage, including six points from Brittany Wilson.
UD continued to play at a high level as the first stanza wore on and back-to-back baskets from Aundrea Lindsey and Kayla Moses made the score 21-6 with 13:34 left in the period. The 2010 NCAA Tournament participants hit over 53 percent of their shots in the first seven-plus minutes to build a comfortable cushion.
The Rockets fought hard to stay close but they did not have an answer for Dayton's strong play and a mini 15-5 run extended the home team's lead to 41-19 at 5:32, forcing the visitors into their fourth timeout.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the opening stanza to make the score 52-30 at the intermission. UT received some good minutes from sophomore Yolanda Richardson down the stretch, tallying five-consecutive points during one stretch.
Unfortunately for Toledo, the Flyers put the game away early in the second half with four-consecutive triples to make it a 30-point difference, 70-40, at 14:47. The closest UT would get the remainder of the game was 25 points in the waning moments.
The Rockets return to action on Friday, Dec. 10 to begin a three-game homestand against Oakland. The opening tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena. UT defeated the Golden Grizzlies, 87-75, on Nov. 18, 2009 in Rochester, MI.
