Toledo Defeats Akron in Double-Overtime Thriller, 1-0

10/3/2010 8:13:00 PM

AKRON, OH - Sophomore Kristen Mattei scored her first collegiate goal in the 106th minute to propel Toledo to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Akron on Sunday at Lee Jackson Field. With the victory, the Rockets' run their win streak to a season-high five-consecutive matches and improve to 8-2-2 overall, 4-0-0 in the Mid-American Conference. UT is beginning league play with four-straight triumphs for the second time in the last four seasons (2007 & 2010).

"I'm excited for today's result, because I thought our kids played extremely hard," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "Akron is a very good team. They are well organized and tough to break down. Today was a tough match."

The second-year midfielder headed in a cross from approximately eight-yards out off a free kick by junior Kristen Lynn for the match winner at 105:25.

"It was an amazing goal for myself and the team," Mattei said. "Kristen (Lynn) played a good ball into the box, and I was able to get my head on it and direct it into the back of the net. We showed great effort today and came out with the win against a good team."

Added Evans, "Kristen (Lynn) did a good job of earning the restart and played an excellent ball into the goalbox that Kristen (Mattei) was able to finish for the match winner."

Between the posts, junior Vicki Traven finished with a pair of saves and earned her fifth shutout of the season and third in the last four matches.

UT finished the MAC contest with a 13-5 edge in shots, including a match-best five off the foot of Lynn, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks to improve to 9-1-0 all time against the Zips (3-8-0, 1-3-0 MAC).

The Rockets return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 when they host arch-rival Bowling Green. The opening whistle is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
