Miami, FL - Senior running back DaJuane Collins rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and freshman wide receiver Eric Page added two scores to lead Toledo to a 41-31 victory over Florida International in Miami Saturday night.
Senior quarterback Aaron Opelt threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Rockets staved off a second-half FIU comeback to claim their second victory of the season.
Toledo's offense racked up 566 yards of total offense, 343 through the air and 223 on the ground. FIU countered with 373 yards of offense.
Toledo (2-2) jumped out to a big lead early in the game, scoring two first-quarter TDs and adding a 36-yard Alex Steigerwald field goal in the second quarter. Opelt scored on a 2-yard keeper to cap a seven-play drive on Toledo's first possession. Collins put Toledo up 14-0 later in the first quarter when he motored 72 yards for a touchdown on the longest run of his career.
The Rockets' comfortable 17-3 halftime lead disappeared when FIU (0-3) blocked a punt on the first series of the second half that the Panthers recovered on the Toledo18-yard line. Four plays later Darrian Mallary ran it in from four yards to put FIU back in the game.
The Rockets countered with a 41-yard TD pass from Opelt to Page. But FIU would not quit, as Panther QB Paul McCall capped a 49-yard drive with a one-yard TD plunge.
But fourth quarter touchdowns by Collins and Page put the game out of reach. Collins scored his second TD, a six-yard run with 12:12 to play, that put Toledo ahead, 31-17. Page sealed the win with a 37-yard TD reception with 8:50 left. FIU put across two late touchdowns, the last with three seconds left, to make the final score close.
Opelt finished the game 18-of-32 for 343 yards. Page had five receptions for 113 yards to go with his two scores. Senior Stephen Williams led the Rocket receivers with 116 yards on six receptions.
The contest closes out the non-conference portion of Toledo's schedule. The Rockets open up Mid-American Conference play at defending MAC West Division champion Ball State next Saturday.
