AKRON, OH ? Akron's Britni Back scored the match's lone goal in the 58th minute to lift the host Zips to a 1-0 victory over Toledo in Friday's Mid-American Conference contest at Lee Jackson Field. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 6-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.
A MAC Player of the Year candidate, Back had a breakaway down the left side and placed a shot into the right corner of the net for her league-best seventh goal of the season at 57:20.
Back's goal proved to be enough for the home team (7-3-0, 2-1-0 MAC), despite getting outshot 13-8 by the two-time defending conference tourney champs. Junior Ali Leak paced the UT attack with a match-high six shots. The Rockets also finished with a sizable 11-1 edge in corner kicks, but could not find the target and were shutout for the first time this season.
Freshman Vicki Traven played all 90 minutes between the posts for the fourth-consecutive match and was credited with four saves.
For UA, netminder Jenn Wolbert also stopped four shots in playing the whole match and helped snap a seven-match losing skid to its in-state rival.
The Rockets return to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Athens, OH to battle Ohio. The opening whistle from Chessa Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
