TOLEDO, OH - Toledo continued its recent run of success against Central Michigan tonight with a 72-61 triumph over the Chippewas in Savage Hall. The victory was the Rockets' 10th straight win over CMU and improved UT to 5-10 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Chippewas dropped to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in MAC play.
Junior guards Tyrone Kent and Jonathan Amos led the Rockets' attack with 20 and 19 points, respectively, to offset Chippewa senior guard Giordan Watson's game-high 23-point effort.
Toledo utilized a pair of scoring spurts in the first half and second half to put away CMU. The Rockets scored 11 straight points to go up 31-17 with 2:13 left in the first half, however, the Chippewas narrowed the gap to seven at halftime on Watson's 50-footer at the buzzer.
CMU then scored the first seven points of the second stanza to tie the game at 34 with three minutes gone. Kent knocked down a jumper to regain the lead for Toledo and scored five more points during an 18-4 run that gave the Rockets another 14-point cushion, 52-38, with 10:52 left. Amos also contributed with six points during the rally.
Central Michigan closed to within seven points with just under two minutes to play, but couldn't score again.
Also scoring in double figures was senior center Jerrah Young with 13 points and junior guard Ridley Johnson with 10 points.
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 with a trip to Kalamazoo, MI to face MAC West Division preseason favorite Western Michigan (8-8, 2-1 MAC). The Broncos rolled to a 71-45 road win over Ball State tonight and are 4-1 on their homecourt this season.
