KALAMAZOO, MI - Western Michigan scored nine runs in the first four innings and defeated Toledo 10-3 in Sunday's Mid-American Conference series finale at Hyames Field. The top four hitters in the Broncos' lineup combined for eight hits, nine runs scored and six RBI to win two of the three games this weekend against their West Division rival.
UT sophomore Ryan France (1-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits in only 3.2 innings of work. The 10-runs the Rockets allowed are the second-most issued this season in league competition. The visitors did, though, get a good relief appearance from senior Greg Gompf, who threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Offensively, the Midnight Blue and Gold (17-17, 8-7 MAC) did not fare much better against a pair of WMU hurlers and were limited to eight hits, including a pair from senior Joel Visser and junior Scott Boley in a losing effort.
Western Michigan's Dan Coberly (4-2) kept the UT lineup off balance for a majority of the afternoon and was credited with the victory. Coberly allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts, before Brett Newsome tossed the final three scoreless frames to pick up his first save of the season.
For the third-consecutive game this weekend, Western Michigan (13-19, 6-6 MAC) jumped on the scoreboard first in its first at-bat. Zach Gentile led off with a walk and Nathan Marquardt drove him in on a two-run home run to left-center off.
WMU added to its lead in the third and tallied three runs on four hits to make the score 5-0. The home team sent eight batters to the plate with Chris Lewis, Brent Gerlach and Marquardt collected RBI's in the frame.
With one swing in the fourth, the Rockets were back in the contest for a brief comment. Junior Sean Boley led off with an infield single and freshman Aaron Dudley followed with his second home run of the season over the wall in right-center field to make it a three-run contest.
Unfortunately, Western Michigan quickly countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth on the strength of three extra-base hits to end the afternoon for UT's France and make it a 9-2 contest.
An inning later and facing a six-run deficit, UT tried mightily to chip away and used a run-scoring ground out off the bat of sophomore Josh Colliver, but this afternoon it just was not enough.
The final four innings the bats cooled down for both teams and a single tally by WMU in the sixth made the final, 10-3.
Toledo returns to action on Tuesday, April 24 to host Cleveland State in non-conference action. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
