Rockets Defeat Detroit 7-0 and Fall Short to No. 73 Michigan State 5-2

East Lansing, MI - Toledo women's tennis finished the weekend 1-1. The Rockets swept Detroit handing the Titans their second loss of the season last night (Feb. 2). This afternoon Toledo's four match win streak when they lost to Michigan State 5-2.
The Rockets first captured the doubles point after a close third match where Jenny Belsky and Sarah Horning battled hard for their 8-7 win. In singles both Myriam Cueva and Nadia Zoubareva went two three set matches against their opponent. Cueva won No. 1 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 and Zoubareva won her No. 3 match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Freshman Jessica Azoulay moved up a spot in singles and won her match 6-4, 6-2. Senior Sarah Horning had the only Toledo shut-out of the day winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Rockets did not have the same luck this afternoon when they took on No. 73 Michigan State. Freshman Martina Wodzinksi and Zoubareva contributed to the Rockets two point. Wodzinksi won at second singles 7-5, 6-0 and Zoubareva at fourth singles 6-1, 6-3.
Cueva and Zoubareva also won at second doubles 8-2. While Maha Guirguis and Wodzinksi did not go without a fight fall at first doubles 9-7. Guirguis also had a close match at third singles falling 7-6, 6-3.
"This is the best we have ever played against MSU," said Head Coach Tracy Mauntler. "The match was close and could have easily gone either way. It also shows how our program is continuously growing."
Toledo is now 4-1 on the season and will return home for four matches before traveling to Florida for Spring Break. The next match will be on February 9 at noon against Dayton at Laurel Hill Tennis Club.
