Toledo Posts 1-0 Shutout Win at Miami

10/19/2007 4:00:00 AM

OXFORD, OH ? Toledo returned to the winning column with a 1-0 victory at Miami in Mid-American conference action on Friday afternoon. With the shutout victory, the Rockets improved to 11-3-1 overall, 6-1-0 MAC, while the RedHawks dropped to 5-6-3, 3-3-1 MAC.

The defending MAC Tournament champions took control of the match from the opening whistle and were on the offensive attack in the early stages of the first half. In the 12th minute, sophomore Heather Wesley received a pass from senior Sarah Schulte, beat her defender and drove the ball into the top left corner of the goal for her first tally in 2007. For the half, Toledo held a 1-0 advantage and out-shot Miami 14-5.

The second half was a completely different story, as the RedHawks out-shot the Rockets 19-10. Miami had a handful of opportunities to score inside the box, but the Midnight Blue and Gold hung together defensively and walked away with its seventh shutout of the season and a 1-0 triumph.

Toledo sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Plewes played all 90 minutes and collected seven saves, including five in the first half, to register her ninth win of the season.

Offensively, sophomore Molly Cornwell and junior Tara Witt led the attack with six shots and five shots, respectively. As a team, the Rockets finished with a season-high 24 shots.

The Rockets return to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Muncie, IN to battle Ball State. The opening whistle from the BSU Soccer Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
