DeKALB, IL -- The University of Toledo women's soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the season Sunday afternoon, using a Kelly Langenbeck golden goal to snare a 1-0 overtime victory at Northern Illinois.
With the win, the Rockets improve to 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The victory also marked UT's first extra-session win since the 2001 season, snapping an eight game overtime winless streak. The loss drops the Huskies to 2-5-2 and 0-2 in the league.
"It wasn't the prettiest win, but it is a win none-the-less," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We had quite a few chances, but we just couldn't take advantage on any of them. I'm happy with the fact that our seniors stepped up when the game mattered most in overtime. Today was a real battle."
In the extra session, NIU's Angeline Impelido looked to have won the game for the home team when she headed in a goal that would have been the game winner. Fortunately for the Rockets, the goal was pulled back because of a Northern Illinois foul. Over the next few minutes, Toledo was able to establish an attack, before Langenbeck broke through the NIU defense and scored her third goal of the season and the game winner at 98:16. Classmate Pam Richard was credited with her first assist of the season and her third point on the weekend.
The Rockets outshot Northern Illinois, 17-11, including 13-7 in the second stanza and overtime. UT also had 10 corner kicks to the Huskies' four on the day. UT was whistled for 17 fouls to NIU's 15.
Junior goalkeeper Jen Whipple spent all 98:16 minutes between the posts for the Rockets and recorded six saves on the day. The shutout was her third of the season.
The Rockets will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 30 when they travel to Oxford, OH to battle Miami in MAC action in a 5:00 p.m. match.
