KALAMAZOO, MI - Western Michigan's Chelsea McNally scored two goals to lead the Broncos to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Toledo in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools at the WMU Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Rockets fall to 5-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 in conference action. The Broncos improve to 3-4-1 and 1-0-0, respectively.
"We played well enough today to win, but I thought we gave one back," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "I know Western Michigan is a good team, but I thought we put them under a significant amount of pressure throughout the match. We just couldn't find the back of the net. Our kids played a good game, but mentally we couldn't finish it out, so I'm a little disappointed."
McNally's game-winning goal came with 4:38 left in regulation, as she headed a loose ball past UT junior goalkeeper Jen Whipple, who made a stellar save on WMU's Laura White shot but could not control the rebound.
McNally's first tally occurred in similar fashion, as she redirected a Chantal Robinson corner kick with her head while in traffic in front of the net.
Toledo opened the scoring in the 57th minute when senior Pam Richard converted on a penalty kick after getting tangled up with WMU goaltender Kate Perz in the box. Perz was subsequently booked with a yellow card.
The Rockets will resume MAC action on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Northern Illinois. Kick-off for that match from DeKalb, IL is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
