Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team finished up its busy weekend schedule with a win over Cleveland State on Saturday (Feb. 19), 6-1, and a loss to Michigan State on Sunday (Feb. 20), 7-0. The Rockets (5-3) handed the Vikings (3-3) their first loss since their second match of the 2005 season, while the Spartans(6-2) continue their winning streak.
"I think we had a great team win against Cleveland State," Head Coach Tracy Honko said. "We had points coming from every part of the lineup. I think Myriam did especially well, taking care of a solid No. 1 singles battle from CSU."
Against the Vikings, the Rockets cleaned house giving up only one singles and one doubles match. UT claimed the first point of the match after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Junior Viviana Rivero and freshman Sarah VanderMolen continued their solid No. 2 doubles play, taking their third-straight victory from Galon and Ungerott, 8-3. Junior Daniella Moran and freshman Sarah Thompson took to the No. 3 spot with a victory over Sellers and Capozziello, 8-4.
In singles, the Rockets claimed victory in five of the six matches. Senior Myriam Cueva assumed the No. 1 post with a win over the Vikings' Galon, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Rivero also took a win in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. The freshman squad of Sarah Horning, VanderMolen and Thompson rounded out the rest of UT's victories with wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Against the Spartans, the Rockets struggled to claim one match, as MSU swept UT in singles and doubles action. At No. 1 doubles, Cueva and Horning fell, 8-2, while their teammates Rivero and VanderMolen, and Thompson and Moran were defeated at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The Spartans prevailed in singles action, as well, taking all six matches in straight-sets.
"Michigan State is a very strong team, however, I don't think they should have beat us 7-0," said Honko. "They overpowered us and we didn't adjust well to their style of play."
Up next, the Rockets will travel to Morgantown, WV to face West Virginia University on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 p.m.
