Pittsburgh, PA - The University of Toledo women's tennis team fell to West Virginia University today (Feb. 27), 6-1. The Rockets (5-4) were only able to pull out one singles and one doubles match against the Mountaineers (5-3). Junior Myriam Cueva scored UT's only point of the match with her singles victory at the No. 1 spot. She continues to lead the team from the No. 1 position with a 13-3 season record.
"WVU was more consistent then we were today," Head Coach Tracy Honko said. "We also seemed slow on the court. We know what we need to work on this week to prepare for our spring trip to South Carolina. I think Cueva played a great match and beat a very tough No. 1 from WVU. She stayed smart through the entire match today."
In doubles competition, UT was able to pull through with one win over the Mountaineers. Cueva and freshman Sarah Horning claimed victory in the No. 1 spot, with an 8-6 win over WVU's Prinz and Walsh. The pair improves to 5-4 on the season, 2-3 at the first flight.
As mentioned before, Cueva was UT's lone victor from the No. 1 slot in singles, with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win over the Mountaineers' Prinz. WVU cleaned up in the other five spots with straight-set victories over the Rockets.
Up next, the Rockets will travel to Hilton Head, SC to battle Northern Kentucky on Sunday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. and the University of Evansville on Monday, March 7 at noon.
