MUNCIE, IN - The Toledo women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Mid-American Conference leader Ball State on Sunday afternoon at the BSU Soccer Field. The Cardinals improve their mark to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in MAC action, while the Rockets fall to 6-5 and 1-3 in league play.
Toledo, which has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, was held without a goal for the third time in 11 games. The Midnight Blue and Gold also suffered a 2-1 loss at Miami on Friday.
"This was a tough loss to swallow," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We battled really hard. Ball State is an extremely talented team, but I thought we played right there with them."
After a scoreless, yet aggressive first half, both teams came out with a vengeance in the second stanza.
BSU's Betsy Wilcek turned in her first goal of the season as she lobbed a shot over Toledo junior goalkeeper Jen Whipple at the 68:49 mark. Wilcek's goal, which was assisted by Sarah Leibel, proved to be all the Cardinals would need to secure the victory.
"Their goal was an unfortunate one for us," Evans said. "It was a cross from way out wide that snuck in under the cross bar on the back post."
Toledo held a slight advantage in shots and corner kicks with 13 and six, respectively. Ball State tallied 11 shots and three corner kicks on the afternoon.
Junior Kirsty Wilson led the Rockets with three shots, while senior Kristen Friedmann and freshman Annie Sullivan chipped in with two shots apiece.
Toledo returns to MAC action next Friday, Oct. 7 when it hosts Akron at 4:00 p.m. Five of UT's last seven league contests will take place at Scott Park.
