MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Bruce Gradkowski threw for 207 yards and three touchdowns in Toledo's 34-14 win over Ball State on Saturday.
Trinity Dawson ran for 146 yards and one touchdown as the Rockets (5-1, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) held the Cardinals to 190 total yards.
Gradkowski hit John Allen with a 13-yard TD pass at 8:48 in the first quarter to give the Rockets a 6-0 lead, but the Cardinals blocked the extra point kick.
Three minutes later, Ball State's Louis Johnson blocked a Toledo punt and Larry Bostic recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Brian Jackson nailed the extra point to give the Cardinals (1-5, 1-2) a 7-6 lead, their last of the game.
Toledo scored 21 unanswered points on a 10-yard run by Dawson and Gradkowski passes of 18 and 32 yards respectively to Steve Odom and Nick Moore, giving the Rockets a 27-7 lead at halftime.
Ball State's Darius Hill scored early in the third on a 16-yard pass from Joey Lynch to narrow the gap to 27-14.
But Jordan Anthony intercepted a Lynch pass with 14:16 left in the fourth and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to give the Rockets the winning edge.
It was the 31st meeting between the two schools. Toledo owns a 16-14-1 edge in the series.
