Toledo Tops Akron In MAC Home Opener, 70-59

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Sophomore Justin Ingram tallied a team-high 14 points and junior Sammy Villegas scored 13 points off the bench to help Toledo defeat Akron 70-59 on Thursday.

Senior Keith Triplett made three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for the Rockets (5-6, 1-1 Mid-American), who made nine of 22 3-pointers in the game.

Darryl Peterson had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Zips (7-4, 1-2), while Romeo Travis pitched in 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Anton Currie provided the Rockets with an early spark when he knocked down three consecutive treys for a 16-8 advantage with 12:39 remaining in the first half.

Akron then fought back to the contest at 19-19 with 6:10 to play in the first half but Ingram followed with two straight layups and freshman Kashif Payne nailed a jumper to help Toledo grab a 26-21 lead with 3:41 left before the Rockets settled for a 30-26 advantage at halftime.

Akron cut Toledo's lead to a single point at 43-42 with 12 minutes to go but Villegas knocked down three consecutive three-pointers for a 52-45 lead with 10:13 to play.

The closest the Zips came the rest of the way was five points.

Toledo returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 9 with a trip to Buffalo, NY to face the Bulls (8-3, 1-2 MAC) in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
