Toledo Battles Valparaiso to a Draw, 1-1

9/10/2004 12:00:00 PM

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's soccer team failed to hold onto a late one-goal advantage, as the Rockets settled for a 1-1 tie against Valparaiso at Owens Community College. The Rockets are now 2-1-1 overall, while the Crusaders' record moves to 1-3-1.

"Our kids are a competitive team and we battled hard for all 110 minutes today," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "I think both teams will come away from today's contest and say they each had their fair share of opportunities."

Toledo scored the game's initial goal at 49:45 on junior co-captain Kelly Langenbeck's second tally of the season. Langenbeck won a free ball about 20 yards out and beat Valpo goalkeeper Erin Murray high for the score.

Toledo carried the one-goal advantage deep into the second half, as the Rockets controlled play with a 16-12 advantage in shots. However, the lead failed to hold true as Crusader forward Kelly Faulkner perfectly placed a header off a free kick from Lindsay Holley and beat an extended Toledo goalkeeper Jen Whipple to knot the score at 1-1 in the 88th minute of play.

Toledo controlled the tempo in the first half and had a golden opportunity to score early. Just 3:06 into the contest, a cross by senior Robin Davidson found junior Sarah Crane all alone in the Valpo goalbox, but she rifled a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced straight down to Valpo's goalkeeper Erin Murray.

UT continued to press the action in the first 45 minutes and had a great second opportunity to tally the game's first goal at 25:13. Sophomore Diana Ginley got behind the defense on a pass by Crane and launched a shot that just went over the crossbar.

Valparaiso's best chance to score before its goal came with 17:12 remaining when Britta Zewers fired a shot from 10 yards out and UT's Whipple made a diving save. Whipple finished the contest with four saves.

"We recruited Jen because we knew she could make the big saves," Evans said. "She is finally healthy and she is one of the one reasons for this team's early success."

Toledo will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 12 when it hosts South Alabama at Anthony Wayne High School. The start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
