BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo's Jenny Dannecker scored three goals on Friday night as the Bulls defeated Toledo, 5-2, in Mid-American Conference action at RAC Field. With the loss, the Rockets drop to 6-6-2 overall (3-4-1 MAC), while the Bulls improve to 4-10-1 overall (3-5-1 MAC).
"This was one of the most unusual games I have ever been a part of," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We came out flat in the first half, and I take responsibility for that. We weren't ready to play."
Dannecker opened the scoring at 17:51 as UB goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert punted a ball past the defense and Dannecker beat Toledo sophomore goalie Jen Whipple for the initial tally. Twenty-three minutes later, UB's Jessica Roesch scored her first career goal, as she lofted a shot from 25 yards out on the left side that Whipple caught in the net. UB's Lindsay Szafranski assisted the goal.
Dannecker added her second tally with 1:34 left in the first half, as Courtney MacVie found Dannecker on a cross to give UB a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Toledo fought back in the second half, after the ejection its leading scorer Rebecca Hollis in the 38th minute for violent misconduct.
The comeback was led by junior co-captain Kelly Langenbeck, who scored both goals withing a two minute span at 63:45 and 65:20, respectively. The goals by Langenbeck were her third and fourth on the season, and she now is tied for the team lead with 10 points (four goals, two assists) on the season. But UB quickly countered when Dannecker found Erica Mincher on a wide-open cross, that Mincher put in the right side of the goal in the 72nd minute to seal the win. Dannecker added her third tally in the 80th minute, as a give from Kathleen Fage could not be corralled by Whipple and Dannecker beat her for an open net goal.
UT's Whipple made seven saves as the Bulls took 21 shots and UB's Calvert stopped eight shots in the Rockets' 20-shot barrage.
"We have to put this one out of the memory and take our chances on Sunday," Evans said.
Toledo returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Kent, OH to battle the Golden Flashes. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
