Final Stats
CLEVELAND, OH - Toledo posted four second-half goals to break open a close match and upend Cleveland State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon in its non-conference season finale at Krenzler Field.
The win improves the Rockets to 5-2 on the season and ties for the second-best mark after seven games in the 10-year history of the program. Toledo was also 5-2 in 1995 and 1996. Their best start after seven contests is 6-1 during the 1997 campaign.
"Today was a game of two halves," said Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans, whose Rockets have claimed shutouts in four of their five wins this season. "We didn't particularly play well in the first half. We did a much better job of ball-winning and creating scoring opportunities in the second half. I thought our players did a good job connecting with more urgency and scored some good goals."
One of the deciding factor in today's match-up was UT's effectiveness in using its reserves, as the Rockets were able to wear down the Vikings. UT used 23 players in the match, including 19 in the first half alone.
Toledo opened the scoring at the 23:08 mark when senior co-captain Kelly Langenbeck scored the first of her two goals. Langenbeck took a feed from classmate Kristen Friedmann and blasted a shot from 15 yards out on the right wing. Today marked the second time in Langenbeck's career, she has tallied a multiple-goal contest. She also registered two goals at Buffalo on Oct. 15, 2004.
The score would hold until the 55th minute. Senior Pam Richard blasted a shot from in close that CSU goalkeeper Erin Withrow stopped but could not control, allowing sophomore Pene Hughes to pounce on it and score on the rebound.
The Toledo depth began to show after that. Langenbeck made it 3-0 when she scored from 20 yards out in the 66th minute. At the 77:13 mark, junior Diane Ginley scored from 15 yards out on the left side and freshman Anne Sullivan quickly followed with the final goal from 20 yards out at the 81:01 mark.
The Rockets outshot the Vikings, 18-6, with junior Jen Whipple and senior Molly Patterson recording two saves apiece in goal, respectively. Senior Mary Robbins also saw action in net for UT, but did not have to make a save.
Toledo returns to action on next Friday, Sept. 23 to begin its Mid-American Conference season at Kalamazoo, MI against Western Michigan. The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
"We've posted two shutouts in a row and we're getting ready to head into conference play," Evans said. "I think we're in good position right now. We're playing pretty well, and the team is excited to the MAC season kicked off.
