Late Goal Lifts Toledo Past Akron, 1-0

10/1/2004 12:00:00 PM

Final Stats

Akron, OH - A goal in the 71st minute would be all the offense Toledo needed this afternoon at Lee Jackson Field, as UT shutout Akron, 1-0, in Mid-American Conference action.

With today's victory, the Rockets snap their three-match winless streak and improve to 5-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 in the MAC, while the Zips fall to 3-6-0 overall, 1-4-0 in the league.

"Today was a fun game," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We had a good week of practice leading up to today's game and our players performed very well, particularly on defense. Anytime you can come away with a conference win away from home is a good thing."

The match's lone score came at 70:48 when freshman Pene Hughes finished off a deflection from an Akron defender. Hughes' unassisted goal is her third tally of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Whipple spent all 90 minutes between the posts for the Rockets and recorded one save on the day. The shutout was her third of the season.

Toledo dominated the shot count, taking nine compared to Akron's three.

The Rockets return to action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when they host Oakland in non-conference action. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Anthony Wayne High School.
