Toledo Drops Heartbreaker to Cincinnati in Overtime, 2-1

8/29/2003 12:00:00 PM

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's soccer team fought hard for 100-plus minutes, but in the end it was the Cincinnat Bearcats who prevailed 2-1 in overtime. Playing the season-opener in a game delayed three times by lightening, the Rockets yielded two goals in the final 20 minutes to give the Bearcats their first win of the season.

"This was a disappointing loss," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We had the lead with a little over five minutes left and we let it slip away. We had an opportunity to put the game away early but we didn't get the job done."

Lightening struck during warm-ups, causing the start of the game to be delayed almost 40 minutes. When the game finally started, Toledo got on the scoreboard first in the 39th minute, as senior Melissa Lesage found the back of the net at 38:47. Lesage was able to break through the Bearcat defense and fire a shot past the UC goalkeeper to give UT the early lead.

That would be the only scoring in the first half, as the teams went into halftime with the Rockets holding a 1-0 lead. Cincinnati posted its first goal of the match in the 85th minute of the match, when freshman Kate Norton drove a shot past the Rockets goalkeeper, Molly Patterson, to knot the score at 1-1.

Cincinnati would claim the victory in overtime in the 101st minute as the rain continued to come down, as senior Tasha Wagner, who won a free ball at the top of the Toledo box, spun and fired a shot that hit the post and went in for the game-winner.

Toledo will return to the field on Sunday, Aug. 31, to open its home schedule against George Washington at Scott Park at 1:00 p.m.
