KALAMAZOO, MI - Toledo (7-15, 1-4 MAC) splits its doubleheader with Western Michigan (8-11, 3-2 MAC) this afternoon at the Broncos' Ebert Field. The Rockets dropped a 3-1 decision in the opener before rebounding for a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap.
The series was originally scheduled to be played in Toledo, but snowfall earlier this week made Scott Park's field unplayable. As a result, the Rockets were the home team in both contests.
In UT's victory, senior Colette McMasters hurled her second straight shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk in her complete-game effort.
The Rockets plated all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior C Tiffany Edgar reached on a two-base error to lead off the inning. Freshman Kate Moxim then pinch-ran for Edgar and advanced to third on senior CF Laurie Linton's one-out single. Moxim scored when junior LF Jenny Schaaf reached on a fielder's choice. UT scored its final two runs on senior RF Kalika Stavroulakis' two-out single to right field.
In the opener, Broncos' junior Wendy Cannon limited the Rockets to five hits and registered nine strikeouts.
Toledo took a 1-0 lead in the second on Edgar's sacrifice fly, but WMU tied the contest with a run in the top of the third.
The Broncos scored the game's final runs in the top of the seventh on 2B Andrea Kellicutt's two-out double to left field.
Freshman Kim Pettitt (3-7) took the loss for the Rockets.
Toledo returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 with a non-conference doubleheader at Cleveland State.
