TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior quarterback Brian Jones completed his first 15 passes en route to a brilliant performance in leading Toledo to a 37-17 victory before a Homecoming crowd of 25,926 at the Glass Bowl on Saturday. The victory was the 17th straight at home for Toledo (4-2, 2-0 MAC), tying a school record set from 1969-72.
Jones connected on 21-of-26 passes for 258 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for a one-yard touchdown on Toledo's opening drive. The Rockets went up, 14-0, on their second drive of the day, culiminated by a 19-yard TD pass from Jones to sophomore Lance Moore. Toledo took a 21-7 lead into halftime thanks to a four-yard TD pass from Jones to sophomore tight end Andrew Clarke with 44 seconds left in the half.
Ball State (2-4, 0-2 MAC) hung tough in the second half, and trailed by just 11 points, 28-17, thanks to a 14-play drive to end the third quarter. But Toledo struck back just two plays later on a screen pass from Jones to senior Carl Ford that went 59 yards for the score.
William Bratton led Toledo with 91 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Toledo, now 27-5 in its last 32 games overall, has not lost at home since a 34-17 setback to Louisiana Tech on Oct. 30, 1999. It is the nation's third-longest home streak, after Nebraska (26) and Miami-Florida (20).
The Rockets next travel to Orlando on Oct. 19 to face MAC newcomer Central Florida.
