TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Tavares Bolden threw two touchdown passes and ran for
another score, and Toledo's defense scored three times as the Rockets beat
Marshall 42-0 Saturday night before a record Glass Bowl crowd of 34,900.
The Thundering Herd hadn't been shut out since a 14-0 loss at Tennessee Chattanooga in 1989, and hadn't given up more than 40 points since a 45-21 loss to Miami (Ohio) in 1997.
Bolden threw a 52-yard TD pass to Mel Long in the first quarter to give the
Rockets (6-1, 3-1) a 7-0 lead.
He also hit Greg Grothous on an 8-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter
and scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth. He completed 13-of-18 passes for 140
yards and rushed for a game-high 82 yards in seven carries.
Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich fumbled twice and threw an interception
- and all three turnovers turned into Toledo touchdowns.
DeJuan Goulde returned a fumble 17 yards for a score in the first quarter,
and Jim Barker fell on a fumble in the end zone in the third. Corey Morris had
a 67-yard interception return for a score in the fourth.
Leftwich was 18-of-32 for 177 yards. He was sacked five times. No other
Marshall player committed a turnover.
The Herd was held to 42 yards rushing on 28 attempts. Toledo had 247 yards
rushing on 49 carries, including 81 from Antwon McCray in 18 attempts.
