Toledo-Iowa State Post-Game Notes
  • With tonight’s victory, the Rockets improve to 16-3 at home under fourth-year head coach Matt Campbell.
     
  • UT has started the year with back-to-back victories against BCS AQ conference teams Arkansas and Iowa State. The Rockets become only the third MAC program to record two wins against AQ conference squads in the same season. Ball State beat South Florida (Big East) and Indiana (Big Ten) in consecutive weeks during the 2012 season, while Northern Illinois defeated Big Ten foes Iowa and Purdue in 2013.
     
  • Toledo has won its last three overtime games dating back to 2013 and improved to 6-3 all-time in extra-period contests. The Rockets and Cyclones went to overtime for the second time and the Midnight Blue & Gold gained some revenge after falling 45-43 in triple overtime in Ames on Aug. 31, 2006.
     
  • Junior RB Kareem Hunt saw his first action of the season and carried the ball 24 times for 129 yards, eclipsing the century mark for the 12th-straight game.
     
  • Senior WR Alonzo Russell caught two passes for 32 yards, including a three-yard TD catch in the first quarter. Russell has now caught a pass in 40-straight games, the third-longest streak in school history, and ranks sixth in UT annals with 20 career TD receptions.
     
  • Junior P Nick Ellis averaged 46.0 yards on four punts and landed one inside the 20-yard line.
     
  • Freshman PK Jameson Vest booted a season-high three field goals, converting from 30 yards in the first period, 19 yards in the second and a season-best 42 yards in overtime.
     
  • Junior RB Damion Jones-Moore was credited the game-winning TD run in the second overtime period, scoring from 10 yards out. Jones-Moore has scored a rushing TD in four-consecutive contests, dating back to last season.
     
  • As a team, the Rockets totaled 13 tackles-for-loss, seven quarterback hurries and five QB sacks.
     
  • Junior LB Jaylen Coleman finished with a career-best 16 stops, including two tackles-for-loss and one pass breakup. Coleman has now totaled double-digit tackles in each of the first two games this fall. He had 13 stops vs. Arkansas last Saturday.
     
  • Junior FS DeJuan Rogers was credited with 10 stops, including one tackle-for-loss and one pass breakup. Rogers has also posted double-digit tackles in each of the first two games this season. He had a collegiate-best 11 stops vs. Arkansas last Saturday.
     
  • Senior FS Rolan Milligan forced a fumble in second period and finished with one tackle.
     
  • Junior DB Connery Swift was credited with a fumble recovery and totaled four tackles.
     
  • Senior DE Allen Covington tied a school record with a career-high five tackles-for-loss, including two quarterback sacks.
     
  • Senior TE Alex Zmolik was credited with a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter.
     
  • Senior DL Orion Jones finished with a collegiate-best two sacks and a career-high seven tackles. Jones’ previous best effort was six stops also against Iowa State on Oct. 11, 2014.
     
  • Senior DE Tre James made one of the biggest plays of the game by postign a sack on the final play in the second overtime.
     
  • Sophomore DE Zach Quinn saw extended time in the second half in place of injured senior Trent Voss and finished with a game-high three quarterback hurries and one tackle-for-loss.
     
  • Sophomore WR Cody Thompson was credited with a blocked punt in the second quarter. The Rockets have now recorded a block in each of the first two games this season. Sophomore DE Zach Quinn blocked a punt against Arkansas last Saturday.
