Post-Game Quotes (following Toledo’s 30-23 (2OT) win over Iowa State)
Toledo Head Coach Matt Campbell
General Comments
“First and foremost, I want to give Iowa State a lot of credit. They played really hard. Their quarterback is an exceptional player. I was really impressed how their team battled back in the fourth quarter.”
“To our fans and students, that was their win. They did it. This place was electric, and quite honestly that is what is so special about the Glass Bowl. The credit goes to all of them that stayed until the end. We are really grateful for their support.”
“I was real proud of our player’s resiliency. We showed a lot of guts and stayed the course. At times, I was really disappointed in our execution. We can’t play like that and expect to win games. We have a lot of work to do as you saw tonight. We are going to have to go back to the drawing board and continue to work on some of the detail things that it takes to be an elite team.”
Late in the fourth quarter, did you think about letting Iowa State score?
A: “That is a great point. We definitely talked about it a little bit, but I don’t think Iowa State was going to give us the opportunity to do it. There was some conversation about doing it. I would love to sit here and tell you that I knew they were going to miss that field goal, but I can’t.”
How would you assess the effort of your kicker Jameson Vest?
A: “I’m so proud of him. Jameson has such resiliency and guts. This is two weeks in a row he has had a miss or a block and come back and made huge field goals for us. A lot of credit goes to him.”
Iowa State Head Coach Paul Rhoads
Should the game have even come down to Cole Netten looking at some the mistakes earlier in the game?
A: There were a lot of plays that affected the outcome of the game. We had an uncharacteristic amount of penalties tonight for our team, which definitely was a contributing factor.
Why were there so many penalties?
A: We’ll look at film and see what we think of all 14 penalties. We were going back to the line and changing some plays.
With a loss like this and the bye week, does that come at a good or bad time?
A: It’s coming regardless. It’s coming next week and we’ll take advantage of it and we’ll have a great week. We’ll practice and get better. We will go out and recruit and we will get the Iowa State brand out there nationally.
Your team came into tonight’s game as underdogs. As the game unfolded, did you feel that you were in that position throughout the game?
A: I didn’t feel that we were underdogs coming into the game, and I would stand by that after the game. We did some things that Iowa State football usually doesn’t do.
Toledo senior quarterback Phillip Ely
“There were too many times the ball was put in our hands and we couldn’t put the game out of reach. We didn’t execute the way we needed to.”
“I’m definitely happy that we won but there are some things we need to fix. If we play that down the road we’re going to get beat.”
“Our effort and attitude is phenomenal and that showed on the field. Even though we didn’t execute on offense, we kept believing before each drive that we could do it especially converting on third downs.”
Toledo junior running back Damion Jones-Moore
On the winning touchdown
“I just tried to read my keys and tried to get into the end zone.””
(on Iowa State’s missed field goal at the end of regulation)
“That was the break we needed. It felt like it was go time after that.”
“You can’t think about stuff like playing time. It’s a team sport and we’re all out here working . Whenever you get your opportunity you have to step up.”
Senior linebacker Chase Murdock
(on Iowa State’s missed field goal at the end of regulation)
“It was a great feeling. That’s for sure. We took advantage of it and came away with win.”
“I don’t think we played our best football. We didn’t do the little things that we need to, but once we get that corrected it will help us improve on the field.”
(on Iowa State’s quarterback Sam B. Richardson)
“He was buying time back there and it made hard for us to stay on guys for a while. Some of those third downs were a result of us not being in the right place, but we’ll get that corrected.”
(on the team’s confidence going into next week’s game vs. Arkansas State)
“We’re looking at every week the same. We need to break down field and stay the course.”
