Charles Cupp won varsity basketball letters in 1935, 1936, and 1937 and won varsity baseball letters in the same years. He led the team scoring in 1935 and in 1937 was runner-up in team scoring to all America Chuck Chuckovits. In 1937 he broke the then national record at the time. Cupp was named honorable mention All-America on several teams. Although no baseball records exist for the period in which he played, newspapers referred to him as the star of the Toledo team at first base, an excellent hard hitter and the best defensive player in the infield. After graduation, he played first base for one of the nation's best baseball teams during World War II ---the Great Lakes Naval Training Station tem that included such professional stars as the immortal Bob Feller.
