Post-Game Quotes vs. Northern Illinois

Toledo Head Coach Matt Campbell – Post-Game Quotes vs. Northern Illinois
“Northern Illinois played four quarters of disciplined football and unfortunately we didn’t.  I also want to thank all of our fans in the community and our student for coming out. It was a great environment to play in, and we’re extremely appreciative of that support. It’s certainly disappointing we couldn’t play better for them.  I was disappointed in our execution. We were not our best tonight and that cost us the football game.”

“We were undisciplined tonight. That’s the best way to put it. We had multiple opportunities to put them away and others times when we had a chance to execute better when we should have. When you don’t do that against a good team, that’s what gets you beat. You have to tip your hat to NIU.”

(on having two running backs gain over 100 yards)
“I thought both Terry and Kareem played well. I wasn’t disappointed with either of those two. Our gameplan was to run the football offensively, but our passing game wasn’t where we needed to be whether it was dropped passes or protection issues.”

Senior Defensive End Trent Voss
“There were a lot of plays that we left out there offensively and defensively. We’ll make corrections to those and come back better tomorrow.”

Senior Linebacker Chase Murdock
“Like coach said, we hurt ourselves and we didn’t play the football we know how to play, and we paid for that.”

“It’s one loss, we’ll make corrections and then it is on to the next game. It isn’t over and we know that. We can’t let this loss change our season. It’s just not smart for us to do.”

“Our leaders need to lead and our seniors need to step up to show the younger guys that we can still do this.”

Sophomore Running Back Terry Swanson
“The first half we came out and we were making a lot of runs and making some big plays but we just stopped executing in the second half.”

“We just need to finish. This one hurts, but we need to continue to come to work every day and get better, because the season isn’t over yet.”

“The playmakers on the team will take this one, because at the end of the day we need to make plays.”

Northern Illinois Head Coach Rod Carey
(Comments about how freshman QB Ryan Graham handled the big game)
“It’s next man up. That’s the mentality you always have as the back-up QB. Ryan has done a great job since Anthony (Maddie) has been out. He has got all the second team reps and really paid attention and dove in. He just shadowed Drew (Hare) with all the film study he’s been doing for the last six weeks. Once he got his blood flowing tonight, he really calmed down.”

(Comments about being able to keep the game within striking distance)
“The defense was giving up some runs in the first half and they got their pads down. We got downhill on them defensively in the second half and that really changed our mindset. Once we did that, we kind of settled down and knew what was coming. We also saw what they had planned for us and that helped keep us in the contest.”

(Comments on the two drives that started on UT’s 20-yard line and the team had to settle for field goals) (one was off a bad punt and the other came after an interception)
“That’s not settling for field goals. We had Ryan (Graham) in and we weren’t going to do a whole lot. We had points on the board and our field goal kicker was feeling good, so we were going to take the points and try to let Ryan get his blood flowing before we tried anything.”
